I. Overall objectives and requirements
1. Overall objectives
It aims to train medical undergraduates with solid medical knowledge, standard clinical skills, good professional qualities and basic abilities to work in clinical settings, to lay the foundation for their further study and their future development in medical research and health administration.
2. Basic requirements
It aims to develop moral ethics, professional qualities, mental stability, dedication and sense of responsibility for medical cause and human well-being. It aims to develop the knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the respect for individual beliefs, life and law, as well as team spirit and creativity. Students are to master basic medical knowledge, and fundamental theories and skills. It aims to develop scientific and critical thinking, the ability to independently acquire knowledge, raise questions, analyze questions and resolve questions, as well as the ability of lifelong learning and self-development. Students are to basically master Chinese language and knowledge of China and Chinese culture.
II. Professional objectives and requirements
1. Professional objectives
It aims to train medical professionals with systematic knowledge of basic and clinical medicine and clinical expertise in diagnosis and treatment, capable of treatment, prevention, and health care work in health institutions.
2. Professional requirements
Students study theoretical knowledge of basic medicine, clinical medicine and preventive medicine, receive skills training, and develop independent learning, lifelong learning and the ability to work in clinical medicine, prevention and health care.
The required professional qualities, knowledge and skills for the graduates are as follows.
(1) Requirements for professional qualities
a. Professionalism, respect for life and health, notion of patients coming first and healing the wounded and rescuing the dying, medical virtues and devotion to medical cause and human health;
b. Legal awareness, practice of medicine in accordance of the law and the ability to protect the rights of patients and themselves by law;
c. Professional ethics and cultural accomplishment, consciousness to uphold medical ethics, care for patients and respect for patients and their individual beliefs during medical practice;
d. Commitment to scientific methods, team spirit, ability of life-long learning and pursuit of scientific truth and innovation;
e. Basic knowledge of Chinese language and the ability to apply it in medical practice and understanding of China and Chinese culture.
(2) Requirements for professional knowledge
a. Knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and the ability to apply the knowledge in medical practice;
b. Normal structure and function of the body and normalmental state;
c. Knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth, pre-natal and post-natal care and family planning;
d. Etiologyand pathogenesis of common and frequently-occurring diseases and factors for disease formation and development;
e. Clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment principles of common and frequently-occurring diseases, and features of Traditional Chinese Medicine;
f. Fundamental knowledge of pharmacology and principles of rational drug use;
g. Patterns of the occurrence, development and spread of infectious diseases, and prevention and control principles for common infectious diseases;
h. Epidemiology, principles of health education and disease prevention, and knowledge ofdisease and disability relief, rehabilitation and end-of-life care.
(3) Requirements for professional skills
a. Ability to take a medical history, to perform a systematic physical and mental examination and to write medical records;
b. Ability to diagnose and treat common and frequently-occurring diseases in internal medicine, surgery, ob-gyn, pediatrics, etc., and to applyproper diagnosis and treatment;
c. Ability to diagnose and treat emergencies;
d. Ability to exercise clinical judgment and to practice medicine applying Evidence-Based Medicine;
e. Ability to communicate with patients and their families and to have patients cooperate and to communicate with other doctors and medical staff;
f. Ability to understand research methods of clinical medicine and to conduct researches based onmedical practice, andto use library and modern information technology to research on medical problems and acquire new knowledge and relevant information;
g. Ability to educate patients and the public in healthy lifestyle, disease prevention, etc.;
III. Major disciplines and main courses

Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Preventive Medicine, Clinical Diagnostics,Medical Imaging, Laboratory Diagnostics,Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Emergency Medicine.
3. Practice
Mainly clinical clerkship and internship for not less than 50 weeks.
IV. Period of study
6 years.
V. Curriculum
There are required and elective courses. Details about curriculum and teaching hours can be found in teaching plans (in the attachment).
VI. Graduation internship
Graduation internship is scheduled in the11th and 12th semesters, of 50 weeks with 16 weeks of internal medicine, 16 weeks of surgery, 5 weeks of obstetrics and gynecology (2 weeks of Gynaecology, 2 weeks of Obstetrics, 1 week in outpatient department), 5 weeks of pediatrics (4 weeks in the ward, 1 week in outpatient department), 3 weeks in Emergency Department (2 weeks in Emergency Internal Medicine, 1 week in Emergency Surgery), 1 week of General Medicine, 4 weeks of elective internship (2 weeks of Anesthesia, 2 weeks of Psychiatry, 2 weeks of Infectious Diseases, etc.).
VII. Teaching Arrangement
School time totals to298 weeks, with 171 weeks of teaching, 22 weeks of exam, 2 weeks of enrolment and graduation orientation, 6 weeks of early clinical exposure, 50 weeks of graduation internship, 41 weeks of vacation and 6 weeks of flexible time.
Teaching periods total to 4330 and credits total to 287, with 3952 periods and 215 credits of required courses, 378 periods and 20 credits of elective courses, 50 credits of graduation internship and 2 credits of graduation examination (of theories and skills).

VIII. Assessment and degree conferment
1. Assessment
Required courses are assessed with either examinationorevaluation. Credits areobtained when the course is passed. Resultsare measured with hundred-mark system. Examinationis arranged by the university andEvaluationisconductedat the end of the course by each teaching and research division. Elective courses are assessed at the end of the course by each teaching and research division and credits areawarded with a pass. The assessment of each course should be based on the syllable. Clinical internship and other practices are assessed by each clinical medical school with skill and theory exams organized by each teaching and research division.
In addition to the assessment of each course, students must also pass graduation exams, which are scheduled in the 12th semester, including clinical skill exam and theoretical exam.
2. Graduation and degree conferment
Students whocomplete and pass all the courses required in the curriculum,obtainrequired credits for elective courses, pass graduation examsand meet the graduation requirements shall be allowed to graduate.
Students who meet the requirements in “PRC Degree Regulations”, “Fujian Medical University Bachelor Degree Conferment Regulations” and “Regulations onGranting Academic Degree to International Students of Fujian Medical University” shall be grantedBachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
